An Extern Member of the Solitaries of DeKoven is one who gives witness to the solitary and silent contemplative life in the world. He or she follows a Rule that incorporates the traditional monastic vows of Poverty, Celibate Chastity, and Obedience with an additional vow of Solitude. Since Extern Solitaries continue to live in "the world" these vows are adapted to each one's living situation.
The discernment process towards becoming an Extern Member of the Solitaries of DeKoven begins with discussion with ones Spiritual Director concerning the vowed Religious life, then written conversation (preferably via e-mail) with one of the Core Members followed by a visit of one to two weeks at the Vigeat Radix Hermitage. The expected time of discernment and formation as an Extern takes between 3 to 4 years.
